| Measurement is the foundation of the whole meteorological
edifice. Vital in developing weather forecasts, instruments also tell
us about the origins of this young science, with the invention of the
barometer, the thermometer and the hygrometer, three centuries ago. Since then, measurements of the wind, precipitation and solar radiation have been added to the three initial sets of data, bringing continuous improvements in the accuracy of measurements and the reliability of forecasts. |
